Owen L Sweasy, age 92, passed away on June 20, 2026, peacefully with his family by his side. He was born on October 25, 1933, in Franklin County, Kentucky, in the heart of the Great Depression and lived his early years during World War I.
Owen was raised in a family of sharecroppers in Kentucky with seven siblings. He was the first one in his family to graduate from high school. He also was the only member of his family to graduate from college receiving a bachelor’s degree from the University of Nebraska in Omaha in 1974. In 1952, after graduating from high school, he joined the Air Force where he spent 26 years in the Strategic Air Command as an Aeromedical Technician. During this time, he was stationed at bases in Louisiana, Arkansas, Michigan, Alaska and Nebraska. He also had temporary assignments in Morocco, Labrador, and England. He retired from the Air Force in 1978 from Barksdale AFB as a Chief Master Sergeant, the highest obtainable rank for enlisted personnel. Owen, being from Kentucky, was a diehard fan of Kentucky Wildcats basketball. He also was a diehard Dallas Cowboys football fan. He loved to bowl, play softball, travel, read and spend time with his family.
Owen is preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Shirley Lutkemeier Sweasy, his parents, Kelly Sr and Celesta, his seven siblings, Kelly Jr., Forrest, Mary, Elizabeth, Billy, Davis, and Carroll.
Owen is survived by his four children; Denise Jackson and husband Gene, Diane DunkiJacobsNolten and husband Peter. Greg Sweasy and partner Rodney Wolfe, and Neil Sweasy and wife Lisa. He is also survived by three grandsons; Kevin DunkiJacobsNolten and wife Christina, Jonathan Jackson and wife Andrea, Taylor Jackson and wife Mariah and four great grandchildren, Victor, Luke, Abigail and Eleanor. He is also survived by a very special friend, Mona Newton, with whom he loved to spend time and to travel with.
A memorial mass will be held in his honor on July 25, 2026, at 11 AM at Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church, 7738 Barksdale Blvd., Bossier City, Louisiana. Visitation will be held prior to the mass at the church starting at 10 AM.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that remembrances be made in the form of donations to Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church.
A special thanks goes to the staff and fellow residents at The Bloom at Bossier and to Christus Hospice, especially nurse Robin Rhone, for their love, support and exceptional care.
