Jessie Curtis
Winfield Sr.
April 27, 1930 – March 8, 2026
Jessie Curtis Winfield Sr. was born April 27, 1930, to Louis Winfield and Willie Smith Winfield in Princeton, Louisiana. He was the baby of the five children born to this union (all who preceded him in death.) At a very young age, he was cared for by his Aunt Amelia “Nudie” Hicks, who called him “Sunman”. Jessie attended Princeton School and later was reunited with his mother and stepfather Riely Jackson who moved him to Los Angeles, California where he continued his education at Jordan High School in Watts, California. Jessie was the ladies’ pet and the men’s fret! He was well known by family and friends as “Redman”.
Jessie had a very outgoing and adventurous spirit. He loved hanging out with his best friends, Elzy and Curtis at their favorite hangout called the Barrell House in Watts on 108th Street. Jessie met his first love, Ann Lee (who preceded him in death) and to this union three children were born (Jerome C Winfield, Tyrone Winfield, Jessie Marie Winfield, his one and only daughter whom he loved, adored and protected.) He also had two other sons; Dwayne Winfield and Charles Winfield (who preceded him in death).
Jessie served in the United States Army from 1951 to 1954. Jessie was a hardworking man; he worked various jobs. Jessie worked for the county of Los Angelous as a Senior Community Worker where he met Lisa who had two children, Bobby Williams and Gina Williams, and to this union Jessie Curtis Winfield Jr. was born. He retired from the county and moved his family to Louisiana in 1980, where he enjoyed working in the yard and riding his lawnmower. Jessie loved fishing, entertaining family and friends on weekends and going back and forth to California to visit his family and friends. He loved hanging out with Elzy who was like his brother. He was the apple of his grandchildren’s eyes. They loved him and it was no secret how much he loved them; especially his number 1 Veronica.
Left to cherish Jessie's memory is his wife, Lisa, children, Jerome (Gwen), Jessie Marie (Raymond), Bobby, Gina, Dwayne and Jessie Jr (Kim), 23 grandchildren, 38 great grandchildren, 16 great-great grandchildren, close friends: Wendall and Ronald Freeman, and a host of other family members and friends.
Jessie stayed ready and lived the life he wanted to live, and the way he wanted to live it. Jessie lived a good, full and meaningful life.
