Jerry Smith, age 84, dedicated family man and proud Vietnam veteran of the United States Army, passed away on Wednesday, September 17, 2025 in Shreveport, Louisiana. Born on November 8, 1940 to parents James and Mildred Smith, those who knew Jerry will remember his kind heart, great sense of humor, and his giving spirit. If he saw a need, he quietly and humbly made sure it was met. He never hesitated to lend a hand, and his compassion left a lasting mark on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Jerry proudly served his country in the United States Army, where he learned the values of discipline, duty, and perseverance that guided him throughout his life. His time in the service shaped his strong work ethic and his commitment to helping others. During his service, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, recognized for his skill in sharpshooting, and received the Vietnam Service Medal in honor of his contributions during that conflict. While in the Army, Jerry also boxed under the guidance of his trainer, Irish McNeel, further reflecting his determination. Jerry’s patriotism remained steadfast long after his service; he held a deep admiration for President Donald Trump and proudly displayed a flag in his honor, a symbol of the pride he felt for his country and his beliefs.
Beyond his service and career, Jerry was involved in his community. In 1976, he served as coach for the 4th, 5th, and 6th grade girls softball team at St. Mary’s, where he shared his love for the game and taught lessons that stayed with his players for years to come.
Above all, Jerry was devoted to his family, he was married for 53 years to the love of his life, Tommie, until her passing in 2021. Together they built a home filled with love and laughter. He was a faithful provider, working hard to ensure his family was always cared for. In Jerry’s life, he was blessed with four children, two sons and two daughters who became the heart of his world. His legacy grew to include seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and eight nieces and nephews. Jerry was also extremely close to his siblings; Richard, David, James Patrick and Judy; he spent time with them playing Rook as well as joining them in the family’s annual poker tournament.
In his free time, Jerry enjoyed fellowship and fun. He was a proud member of a bowling team at All Star Lanes in Shreveport, Louisiana and was also a member of the American Legion Post 14 where he loved listening to live music and joining in on the dance floor. Jerry’s love extended beyond his family to the animals in his life; his affection for animals was so great that at one point, he cared for 15 cats at once.
In the last years of his life, Jerry was blessed with the devoted care and friendship of his caregiver, Kristie Causey. What began as caregiving grew into a close and treasured friendship, Kristie became not only a trusted companion but also Jerry’s best friend. Her kindness and presence brought him great comfort in his final years, and their friendship was a source of strength and joy for them both. The love and support Kristie showed Jerry will always be remembered with gratitude by his family.
Jerry was preceded in death by his beloved wife; Tommie Smith, his parents; James and Mildred Smith, his brothers; Richard Smith and David Smith, and his sister; Judy Cummings.
A memorial service will be set for a later date. Though Jerry will be deeply missed, his family finds comfort in knowing he is reunited with Tommie once again, and that his laughter and love will continue to echo in their hearts for generations to come.
