Joan Elizabeth Wassenhove

d. April 10, 2017

Joan Elizabeth Wassenhove, 85, passed away after a lengthy illness on April 10th, 2017. She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Louis Wassenhove and by a daughter Linda Coons. She is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Ronald and Joanne Cardis of Hudson, NY; her daughter and son-in-law, Deborah Wassenhove-McCarthy and Kevin McCarthy of Shreveport, Louisiana; her daughter and son-in-law Kimberly Dolin and Brian Dolin of Germantown New York, and son-in-law Gerald Coons of Schoharie, NY. Joan and Albert loved all three of their grandchildren, Kaitlin (McCarthy) Sullivan (husband Lieutenant Todd Sullivan) of Fayetteville, NC; Casey Dolin of Germantown, NY and Debbie Ann Coons of Schoharie, NY. Joan was born on August 22, 1931 to Steven and Mollie Cardis of Maspeth, Long Island, NY. In the late 1940's she moved with her family to the town of Ghent, NY, where she met her husband, Albert, in 1957. They shared 58 wonderful years of marriage together, living the majority of her life with her husband Albert and their children in a beautiful country home in the Hudson River Valley. Joan worked as a Physical Therapy Aide for the Pinehaven Nursing Home in Philmont, NY. Joan and Albert were community activists, working with others in the region to enhance the quality of life for residents within the Ghent, Philmont, and Hudson communities. Despite her strong ties to her New York community, Joan decided to share the final months of her life with her daughter and son-in-law here in Shreveport, LA. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on April 24th, 2017 at 1:00PM at Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Roman Catholic Church, 522 East Fluornoy Lucas Road, Shreveport, LA with Fr. Philip F. Michiels as the celebrant. Interment will be at a later date at Cedar Park Cemetery in Hudson, NY. In lieu of flowers, donations in honor of Joan's life can be made to St. Joseph Indian School(http://www.stjo.org) or to the Disabled American Veteran's Association (https://www.dav.org).
